Our Assessments Measure Reputation, Not Identity
At Hogan, we believe that success in the workplace is driven by how others perceive us — not just how we perceive ourselves. That’s why our assessments focus on measuring reputation, not identity. While identity reflects the story we tell ourselves about who we are, it is often inaccurate. In contrast, reputation — how others experience our behaviours — is a powerful predictor of career success and leadership effectiveness. By assessing reputation through scientifically validated tools, Hogan provides deep insights into how individuals truly perform, interact, and lead in the real world.
Identity
Identity is the story we tell ourselves about ourselves — your identity is the person you think you are. While there might be some takeaways in how we perceive ourselves, we sometimes can be wrong. We often have an inflated idea of our own talent, or we might be unnecessarily hard on ourselves.
Reputation
Reputation, on the other hand, is what everyone else thinks of us, and it’s based on our visible behaviours and social skills. Your reputation is the person other people think you are, and your success in the workplace is dependent on your reputation. That's why this is the part of personality that the best personality tests are based on.
Our Core Assessments
HPI
HDS
MVPI
HBRI
The bright side of personality, measured by the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI), describes how we relate to others when we are at our best. Whether your goal is to find the right hire or develop stronger leaders, assessing personality gives you valuable insight into how people work, how they lead, and how successful they will be in your organization.
The dark side of personality, measured by the Hogan Development Survey (HDS), consists of qualities that emerge in times of increased strain. Left unchecked, these can disrupt relationships, damage reputations, and derail people’s chances of success. By assessing dark-side personality, you can recognize and mitigate performance risks before they become a problem.
The Inside of personality, measured by the Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI), describes the core goals, values, drivers, and interests that determine what we desire and strive to attain. By assessing values, you can understand what motivates candidates to succeed, and in what type of position, job, and environment they will be the most productive.
The Hogan Business Reasoning Inventory (HBRI) examines business reasoning ability, which includes problem-solving and decision-making. All the HBRI problems are business related and measure the test taker’s ability to use business information to make accurate decisions based on data.
JUD
The Hogan Judgement test goes beyond “right” and “wrong” decisions. This cognitive test looks at how people make decisions and assesses their biases to help with decision-making self-awareness. It also tells us about how people tend to react to feedback regarding their decisions. This is important because a large part of leadership is responding appropriately to bad news or finding out a decision was wrong and then using that feedback to improve and make future adjustments.
